Graduation project Maide
A graduation project born from a sense of urgency to preserve a fading cultural heritage: the traditional basket weaving craft from Rize, a region in Turkey where Maide’s roots lie. With generational knowledge disappearing, the challenge was to reconnect with this endangered tradition and give it a voice in a contemporary context.
Maide travelled to Rize to learn directly from local artisans, immersing herself in the original techniques of basket weaving. The goal was to reinterpret these methods into a modern collection that honors the cultural and emotional weight of the craft.
In collaboration with Evi Flooren, the visual direction of the project was shaped by a deep sensitivity to materiality. Fabrics were chosen and styled to echo the texture and honesty of the original craft, allowing the garments to “speak” through grounded, quiet imagery. Paper structures were added to the edit as a subtle reference to the meticulous handwork behind each piece.
The outcome is a visually rich and emotionally layered collection that bridges past and present. GURBET stands as both a tribute and a preservation of cultural memory through contemporary design.
